We believe everyone can dance, and are committed to creating inclusive and non-judgmental spaces for people to dance in the dark.
No Lights No Lycra’s original concept of dancing in the dark was established in Narrm (Melbourne) 15 years ago, and has grown to become a global community, simply because joy is contagious, and people love to dance!
No Lights No Lycra Education is a not-for-profit organisation that builds on the success of No Lights No Lycra community events. With the No Lights No Lycra Student Ambassador Program, we collaborate with school communities to encourage young people to move for better health and wellbeing, and express themselves freely and safely.
Co-designed with and for young people and their school communities, the program is run by a group of students who undertake our free online training modules. The online training videos and activities will guide students through the process of promoting and facilitating No Lights No Lycra events at their school. Areas students will focus on during training include, leadership, marketing, event safety ,and community engagement and connection.
The program builds physical and social confidence, encourages health and wellbeing, and nurtures expression and creativity. Student Ambassadors and students who participate in No Lights No Lycra events learn to encourage and inspire the next generation to enjoy dance as an everyday valued form of exercise and mindfulness, while breaking free of the social pressures that so often surround young people on the dance floor.
The Student Ambassador Program is aimed at young people between 10–25 years old, with our training modules aligning with the critical thinking, learning development and academic experiences of students within these levels. As the program is designed to be independently run in schools, there is opportunity to be flexible with the cohort centered in the program. We encourage a range of year levels participating as Student Ambassadors to build connections among peers and year levels. The No Lights No Lycra events that will be run by Student Ambassadors are open to all secondary levels, strengthening the school community.
Can be completed in one lunchtime.
The duration of the event is directed by the Student Ambassadors, and can be flexible based on the times available to run events within school hours. We recommend events running for 15-30 minutes to ensure students have the time to immerse themselves in movement and music, get heart rates up, with an opportunity to cool down. The flexibility of events allows Student Ambassadors to run No Lights No Lycra sessions, before or after assembly, lunchtime or during a free class period for example.
We encourage regular No Lights No Lycra events to be run at schools for students to receive the full benefits of No Lights No Lycra. Our No Lights No Lycra events across the world run on a weekly basis, but we understand school timetables may allow for a different routine. Days and times can be flexible to ensure that events can go ahead, regardless of what is on.
Student Ambassadors commit to the role for the entire school year. This ensures they have the opportunity to establish ongoing and meaningful connections with their peers and participants, and No Lights No Lycra Education can continue to adapt and improve the program in collaboration with students.
Our No Lights No Lycra Education Team will support your Student Ambassadors to ensure their No Lights No Lycra events are safe and accessible for all. As part of the online training, Module 3 – Safety in the Dark focuses on the safety of No Lights No Lycra events. With the support of training, and additional resources, students will create a dimly-lit space that is safe and considered. To support the safety of students, we have the following documents and policies that students and educators can access on our website:
- No Lights No Lycra Event Venue Requirements
- Student Ambassador COVID-19 Safety Plan
- COVID-19 Management Agreement
- Child Safety Code of Conduct
